About the wood

I always use English hardwoods, here are some of the woods I use.

Lacewood
Lacewood:- which is actually London Plane, sawn on the quarter to display the very pronounced silver grain pattern.

Spalted beech
Spalted Beech:- Spalted means wood that has been invaded by fungi, which produces striking colour patterns of browns and black. After the wood has been dried the fungi become inactive.

Wild Cherry
Wild Cherry:- This is a beautifully marked wood and one of my favourites. I usually include some lighter sapwood in the designs as a contrast.

Walnut
Walnut:- Another stunning wood with lots of character.

Spalted Silver Birch
Spalted Silver Birch:- this can be a very beautifully marked wood.

Yew
Yew:- actually classed as a soft wood!! But is a probably as hard as Oak. This a another favourite wood of mine. There is a striking contrast between the creamy white almost ivory looking sapwood and the golden brown heartwood.

All my work is finished with several coats of "Renaissance Wax" Click Here for details.
